Would You Rather Review
Would You Rather is a Horror film made for Horror fans, lovingly constructed in Hitchcockian fashion, its belies it’s straight to VOD roots and delivers an enjoyable, thrilling romp. All the signs were there for the film to be just another torture porn schlock horror, it’s another strangers controlled by an unknown forces set up (which has been overdone and needs to come off the Bar B Q). Also seeing Brittany Snow headlining the cast list was worrying as Snow must have a bad back at this stage because she’s carried more film’s then I can count.
But unlike a lot of other ‘strangers trapped in a room’ set ups, the film keeps a steady hand through out and never ambles aimlessly as many of it’s counterparts have. It knows where it’s sensibilities lie (they are of the classic horror, old school brand) and it happily presses its tongue firmly against it’s cheek. But it keeps itself taut enough to be effective and creates character’s whose fate you care about. The Machiavellian host and surreal requests help keep the film out of the pitch darkness and save it from being too disturbing to enjoy.
Morality is the name of the game here in more ways than one and the film plays on riffs from Saw though it is presented in a more elegant manner (no dirty tools to the abdomen here) . Would You Rather is a story of gambling and the theme applies to the film itself. When watching any film within the genre of Horror, you gamble that you might see something that is disturbing and haunting, that will stay with you after the credits roll and that is the hand that is dealt with this film which has a very perverse twist in it’s tail, but as a horror fan it is a gamble enjoyably lost because it was exactly what you were asking for.
