The Bad Horror Film Club : Tamara
Welcome to The Bad Horror Film Club , Here we take a look at Horror films that give off a ‘Likely to be baaaaaad’ vibe . TheHorroronline is going to see if they can find a diamond in the crappy horror movie rough. Each film will be given a fair chance and we will discover whether or not they belong in The Bad Horror Film Club
For Consideration : Tamara (2005)
Before dancing to fame in Step Up and becoming half of one of the most genetically blessed couples on earth, Jenna Dewan starred in this straight to DVD horror. Dewan plays the eponymous Tamara, a shy friendless high school student with a secret interest in Wicca. When the popular kids in her class pull a prank on Tamara that goes horribly wrong, she returns from the afterlife to seek a deadly and supernatural revenge.
The Horrorline’s journey into the ‘bad’ side of horror has been a tumultuous and at often times terrifying one (for the wrong reasons) . These low budget straight to DVD offerings are crowded with actors who should never have stood in front of a camera, writing that isn’t fit for the back of a cereal box and direction that often suggests that the ‘director’s’ most important frame of reference was ‘boobs’. So the Horroronline would like to actually publicly thank Tamara for restoring their faith in fun horror movies. Tamara is a brilliant horror film, as it has no illusions of grandeur – it’s a sexy, trashy take on Carrie, that has fun with its concept. Jenna Dewan revels in her role as the shy tormented girl turned sexy evil siren. Viewing the film in hindsight, it is clear why Dewan is literally the only member in the cast list who went on to truly ‘break’ Hollywood. Tamara has weak points ; occasional flat acting from the supporting cast and clunky writing, but these faults actually add to the cheesy charm of this trashy supernatural revenge romp. Tamara’s transformation is a fun and rewarding one to watch, her treatment of the bewildered D-bags who made her life a misery proves playfully cathartic for anyone who has ever faced the torment of bullying. Though the subject matter is dark the film never wallows in disturbing territory, this is Carrie without the subtext, this tormented outsider doesn’t just inherit supernatural abilities, she inherits power and relishes in it.
This film was made for those of us who enjoy our Horror ; gory, silly and fun. It deserves to be seen in a dark room with popcorn and friends. A highly recommended watch!
The Bad Horror Film Club Verdict : Tamara you are a gory, sexy, silly good time and you do not belong in The Bad Horror Film Club!
