Horror Movie Boyfriend Showdown
I did an article recently giving some love to ‘Final Girls’ ; Final Girl Smackdown and it got me thinking about other familiar characters that we find in horror films, especially those of the slasher genre and I decided it was time to look at the one person who should be the ‘Final Girl’s’ greatest ally ; The Boyfriend. The Final Girl often needs her boyfriend for support during difficult times, for instance when she’s being stalked by a killer and her best friend is trying to convince her to just drink and party to forget her woes and her parents are clueless or nonexistent. But the boyfriend isn’t always the greatest source of comfort and support, sometimes he can be disbelieving, behave in a suspicious way or if he’s portrayed by Freddie Prinze Jr handle the situation by constantly making a confused fish face. Let’s rate these boys!
Note : There are spoilers ahead for anyone who has not seen the films discussed here.
Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
Boyfriend : Glen Lantz (Johnny Depp)
This floppy haired scamp did his best to help girlfriend Nancy in her fight against Freddie Kruger, even though he was a little bit slow on the uptake. Unfortunately he was crap at staying awake, which led to him leaving Nancy in a very dangerous situation and ending up as a blood fountain. But he gets extra points for being supportive and for wearing a crop top.
Boyfriend Points : 7/10
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Boyfriend : Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.)
Ray didn’t seem to be much of a thinker, for example when he was outraged, upset or confused he forgot to close his mouth but he was a dark horse and there were hints that he might be the deceptive killer. He was exceptionally useless when it came to protecting Julie against hot head Barry but he redeemed himself greatly in the film’s finale when he saved Julie from the killer. He gains points for actually surviving to make it to the awful sequel.
Boyfriend Points : 6/10
Boyfriend : Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrick)
Even before his murderous ways were exposed Billy was putting pressure on Sidney to have sex with him which makes him a very bad boyfriend! But the fact that he was revealed to be a crazy homicidal nut bag who wanted to kill Sidney makes him our standout loser.
Boyfriend Points : 0/10
House of Wax (2005)
Boyfriend : Wade (Jared Padaleki)
Not even deserving of a last name Wade appeared to mostly be a piece of man meat with nice facial hair. He didn’t have a lot to say but he enjoyed hand holding. Unfortunately he proved utterly useless to Carly in her fight against the killer because he ended up a wax statue.
Boyfriend Points : 4/10
And the winner is Glen Lantz! Yes he wasn’t the best at staying awake and thus wasn’t always that helpful to Nancy but he was I feel the most believable boyfriend and one of the most memorable. He clearly cared for Nancy and her for him and so his death was utterly heartbreaking and shocking. Losing Glen could also be seen as the driving force for giving Nancy the strength to defeat Freddy. I Know What You Did Last Summer’s Ray almost claimed the title because he helped Julie defeat the killer and managed to survive but I think his heroism came a little bit too late.
